FOUNDER, TOOL ROOM SERVICES
Michael, known to everyone except his wife Valda as Mike, was born in Cape Town, South Africa. After graduating from high school, he began an Apprenticeship in 1964 to become a machinist and 10 years later he made a decision that would change his family’s life and the lives of machinists in Canada.
He married his beloved wife Valda in 1968. After his daughters were born, Mike realized that his opportunities would remain limited in South Africa. He wanted more for his family. In 1974, he and his wife made the brave decision to immigrate to Canada. They settled happily in Burlington, quickly buying a home. Mike adapted well to his new homeland, embracing hockey and football and becoming an avid golfer. Mike and his family created a lovely new circle of friends, while welcoming family from South Africa.
In 1983, he joined as a partner in a small sharpening company. Within the next two years, he became the sole proprietor of what would become Tool Room Services Inc. Valda joined him to do the accounting. Mike expanded the business over the years, engaging talented people, many who remain with the company to this day. Mike was able to provide a beautiful life for his family and his work family. So many people were able to come to Canada and live their dreams because of Mike’s support.
Mike was a well-respected member of the manufacturing community in Ontario. Through his dedication to building and sharing skills, he earned the right to choose who he worked with: his team, his customers and his suppliers. He understood the value of working with people he respected and shared his ethical approach to doing business. This was possible because of his reputation for excellence, honesty, straight forwardness and a dedication to hard and meaningful work.
This is Mike’s true legacy: his absolute commitment to making sure that the next generations of machinists benefit from his wealth of knowledge and that example has become ingrained into the culture of Tool Room Services for generations to come.
